The Concept of
Dharma
Understanding Your Duty
What is Dharma?
The word Dharma comes from the Sanskrit root “dhri,” meaning “to hold” or “to sustain.” In simple terms, Dharma means the principles or duties that sustain your life and society. It is often translated as duty, righteousness, law, or moral order. But these translations barely scratch the surface.
Dharma is deeply personal and situational. It’s not a one-size-fits-all rulebook but a guide to living in harmony with yourself, others, and the world around you. It’s about fulfilling your role—whether as a parent, a friend, a professional, or a citizen—with integrity and awareness.
The Three Types of Dharma
Sanatana Dharma
Eternal universal laws: honesty, compassion, non-violence.
Svadharma
Your unique duty based on nature and circumstances.
Varnashrama Dharma
Responsibilities related to stage of life & society.
